As a Staff Software Engineer of the Patient, Provider, and Identity team, you will be responsible for contributing to Invitae’s mission-critical systems. Thousands of patients and providers use these systems daily to access Invitae’s testing capabilities and find answers to their most pressing health questions. Invitae’s business depends on these systems operating securely, reliably, and efficiently to ensure our patients get accurate results in a timely manner.
In this role, you will be instrumental in unlocking new opportunities for the business by delivering a unified backend that powers our user experiences which will simplify our architecture and set us up for success for 2024 and beyond roadmap deliverables. This is a major company initiative which is critical for us to realize our mission of improving healthcare for billions of people. 

 What you will do:

  • Work across the organization to plan and execute large, cross-functional initiatives, including: project definition, technical specification, task break-down, delivery, monitoring, and maintenance
  • Design and implement software systems and services critical for the company’s success
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure the alignment between the technical direction and business needs across stakeholders
  • Lead and mentor engineers by providing strong guidance and technical leadership across code, design, and operation
  • Estimate and manage team project timelines and risks
  • Conduct technical and soft skill evaluations to inform and influence the hiring decisions
  • Lead cross-team engineering initiatives

 What you bring:

  • 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years experience. Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Experience mentoring engineers with leadership responsibilities  
  • Expert understanding and experience of client-server architecture and distributed microservice systems
  • Expert system architecting capability to see the big picture and envision how business and product requirements can be broken up into system modules or components
  • Proficiency in at least one more modern programming language, and the ability to understand more than one. We currently use predominantly Python.
  • Expert technical knowledge around web application architectures, communication protocols, API design (REST, RPC, etc), etc 
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills especially across distributed teams
  • A system architect who can see the big picture and envision how business and product requirements can be broken up into system modules or components
  • Intrinsic self-motivation to work independently with minimal supervision

 Bonus:

  • Experience in healthcare industries dealing with complex business logic
  • Hands-on experience with event-based architectures using RabbitMQ, Kafka, etc
  • Experience working with a geographically dispersed team
This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience and location. Key Role Responsibilities:

About the Role:

This role is crucial for maintaining vulnerability intelligence data. We collect data from various sources in different formats and process collected data turning data into usable information.

Responsibilities include developing and maintaining parsers and processors for various data formats and sources, storing processed data in data stores (mysql and others). We mainly use Java for backend development with a few other technologies for smaller tasks.

The Role:

At Khan Academy we are committed to fair and equitable compensation practices, the well-being of our employees, and our Khan community. This belief is why we have built out a robust Total Rewards package that includes competitive base salaries, and extensive benefits and perks to support physical, mental, and financial well-being.

The target salary range for this position is $181,990 - $227,488 USD / $227,488 - $284,360 CAD. The pay range for this position is a general guideline only. The salary offered will depend on internal pay equity and the candidate’s relevant skills, experience, qualifications, and job market data. Exceptional performers in this role who make an outsized contribution can make well in excess of this range.  Additional incentives are provided as part of the complete total rewards package in addition to comprehensive medical and other benefits.
