Who you'll be be joining

Our Embedded Chapter is made up of 20+ Embedded Developers with a wide variety of specialties, skill sets, backgrounds, and experiences. They aim to bring their Embedded experience to the cross-functional squads that they are a part of, with a focus on collaboration, learning, development.

As a Senior Embedded Engineer, you will be responsible for helping develop the software that powers our hardware products.  These devices run on a multitude of platforms from small, battery operated microcontrollers to full-blown multicore embedded Linux systems. 

The embedded team is in a unique position as we own a wide breadth of the technologies that get built into our devices making each day a unique challenge. You may be working on portions of the low-level software/hardware interactions, but equally important is the development of the user applications that run on device.  Everything from network protocols, to control algorithms to building enticing graphic UI’s. 

The embedded team is also responsible for developing the test fixtures used to validate the functionality of each device manufactured.  These devices are truly products on their own and no less complex considering the hardware and software systems they must interface with.

Aside from the in-house technologies, the embedded team is often also responsible for integrating third-party services.  For example, we developed the device software stack that allowed us to become one of the first Apple HomeKit accessories on the market as well as more recently one of the first third parties to integrate Amazon Voice Services for Alexa functionality built right into a thermostat and on device Siri integration.  

To accomplish all of this, at any given time you may be working closely with developers from other teams as well as our QA, Product Management, Manufacturing, Hardware teams and third-party tech companies on integrations.

What You’ll Do

The Orpheus team was formed to own a very important aspect of Cloudflare's systems: enable more reliable network connectivity for Cloudflare’s products than the Internet itself provides.

Almost all products in Cloudflare’s portfolio are or will be powered by Orpheus technology, including CDN, Spectrum, Magic Transit, Stream, Workers, Workers AI, R2, WARP, and more. As a member of the Orpheus team, you’ll be a key technical contributor to the cutting edge network software infrastructure used by those products.

You will work closely with various Engineering teams to translate their requirements into new capabilities on the platform. Likewise you will partner with Network Engineering and SRE to ensure that the technology makes the best use of Cloudflare's world-class edge network.

You will participate in all stages of the software development lifecycle, from designing and documenting systems, to writing code and automated tests, to planning, managing, and monitoring production software deployments. You will work with a wide range of technologies and programming languages, including Rust, Go, Linux networking, ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, Grafana, Kubernetes, and more.

Engineering teams at Cloudflare operate a Run What You Build model, including ours. We are responsible for the health of our system and participate in our team's on-call rotation as part of operational responsibilities.

Compensation

  • Investigate data breaches leveraging forensics tools including Encase, FTK, X-Ways, SIFT, Splunk, and custom Unit 42 investigation tools to determine source of compromises and malicious activity that occurred in client environments
  • Serve an active role on unit 42, incident response engagements - guiding clients through digital forensics investigations, containment of security incidents, and providing guidance on tactical remediation recommendations
  • Ability to perform light travel requirements as needed to meet business demands (on average 30%)

Qualifications

Your Experience

  • 2+ years of incident response or digital forensics experience with a passion for cybersecurity 
  • Proficient with host-based forensics and data breach response
  • Experienced with EnCase, FTK, X-Ways, SIFT, Splunk, Volatility, WireShark, TCPDump, and open-source forensic tools
  • Ability to grow into a valuable contributor to practice and, specifically
    • have an external presence via public speaking, conferences, and/or publications
    • have credibility, executive presence, and gravitas
    • be able to have a meaningful and rapid delivery contribution
    • have the potential and capacity to understand all aspects of the business and an excellent understanding of PANW products
    • be collaborative and build relationships internally, externally, and across all PANW functions, including the sales team
    • Incident Response Consulting is highly preferred

    Position Overview

    For this role you should be a leading Technical Support Engineer, experienced in technical support of complex technologies in challenging global environments. As part of the Support team you will be responsible for ensuring that the customer experience remains positive throughout the lifecycle of their support interactions.

    You are likely to already be an expert in your field, the individual your colleagues come to for assistance and the individual that customers ask for when they're in difficult situations.
