Job Description

Timmons Group is seeking a Substation Physical Engineer III for our Electrical Design Grouplocated in our Charlotte, NC office. Responsibilities include preparation of substation project design, studies, and technical documents in the support of the design of substation projects throughout the country; and other activities related to substation design work. The candidate will lead the project design team and provide supervisory direction for the design and layout drawing production including general arrangement plans, conduit, cabling, fencing, grounding, and control building layouts as well as wiring diagrams and schematics and the specifications to support procurement and construction of these types of facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Develop scopes of work, conceptual designs, and execution plans
  • Prepare engineering cost and man-hour estimates and schedules
  • Physical substation design including yard layouts, plans, and details, grounding plan, lightning protection, control building, exterior raceway systems, and develop complete bills of material
  • Arrangement of substation structure elements, and associate equipment and their foundations
  • Develop section views and other detail drawings that show structures, prepare equipment and bus work installation drawings
  • Ground grid design plan and equipment/structure grounding details
  • System sizing studies
  • Prepare calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, insulation coordination studies, etc.)
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and participate in factory acceptance testing
  • Coordinate design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.)
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel
  • Provide short term field support during construction

Skills/Requirements of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from accredited program
  • Minimum 7 years related experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience) 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred
  • Proficiency with National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE / ANSI Standards

  • Works under the supervision of Project Managers or other staff for assigned projects to produce electrical engineering designs
  • Provides input to senior engineering staff on design issues based on the results of calculations or engineering solutions

  • As an individual contributor, uses professional judgement to direct and independently complete assigned engineering designs
